Applied to the body: Stable in the Base, Capable in the Middle and having a higher Vision. Yoga is the dialogue between body, mind and breath. My physiology is my neurology. My state of mind shows up in my body mediated by my breath. As my breath, so my mind. With breath work, I vibrate higher to the frequency of joy. IGNITE + INSPIRE with KAT VILLAIN

IGNITE + INSPIRE with KAT VILLAIN

BYH is honored to host guest teacher Kat Vallain author of book, Yoga as Origami and exceptional yoga instructor from Canada. Kat gleans her teaching from Katonah Yoga in NY and will undoubtedly inspire, inform and introduce a new way of practicing yoga for longevity and joy. This workshop is open to all – beginners to seasoned practitioners.

#1 Introduction to Katonah Yoga

The body is the measuring stick of the cosmos and is designed in perfect proportion. To understand one’s body is to understand the vaster functioning of the universe. This personal pattern fits itself and then fits universe when well folded. Using the body as origami is a pragmatic and esoteric way in which to move efficiently throughout one’s physical structure. The precision of the folds in the practice irons out the wrinkles in the body, freeing out the habits in the mind. The body is the mind and wherever a density lies in the body is where the mind does not measure up. The better one can fold oneself, the more one can learn to work smart, using the geometry of the body, as oppose to working hard, which relies upon the muscles of the body. This practice is to find more ease in everyday life by virtue of finding it in the body. This workshop will focus on training the practitioner to use the intelligent fit and efficient design of the human body in order to move through life with more ease.

#2 A Seasonal Practice

This workshop will train the practitioner in engaging and participating in a seasonal dialogue using specific yoga poses as a means to achieve harmony with one’s external surroundings. The daoist maxim of “who are we to go against the 10,000 laws of nature” will be used as the framework to enable one to live a skillful life that is invariably in flux. Nature is cyclical and the more clearly one can open up one’s senses to perceive what is going on around oneself, the easier it becomes to move through life with utmost ease. As the seasons change, the yoga practice should mirror these changes, merging one to Nature’s timeless laws. In summer we go out, participating in community and when the flip of winter arrives we are prepared to go into our caves to develop insights. This workshop will move through each season giving the practitioner appropriate tools to align with their circumstances.

#3 Adjustment Workshop

The true magic of practicing in community is that it allows one to leverage one’s circumstances. To practice beside another person is to truly show yourself: your strengths and weaknesses, knowing that a supportive and nurturing environment is where a lot of growth can take place. It is very hard to see our blind spots, and that is why we have friends to tell us when our behaviour is not measuring up. In the practice, when the pose does not measure up, one is typically lacking technique, formula, and ingredients. It is only when shown the proper proportions that one can transcend their personal frame of reference. This workshop will be heavily focused on working as a community to break through the personal technique that is holding us back. Learning how to adjust each others postures will be the focus of this class. It is when a friend has our back that we feel truly supported.

#4 Unwind the Spine

This workshop focuses upon spinal fluidity. The spine is the centre of our health, the heart of our nervous system. Esoterically the spine is our celestial pillar, the gateway between the cosmos and the planet and the highway from the primitive to the conscious. As gravity pulls our spines down we need tools and techniques to manipulate gravity. This workshop is focused on unwinding the spine, unraveling and relinquishing deeply held patterns that lie within. To have a healthy and supple spine is the gateway into an elevated vision. Techniques will be utilized to inform the flow and fluidity of our spine, allowing us to emulate this fluidity in our everyday lives. Liberation within the confines of our body starts with our physical vessel and a liberated body is a liberated mind. Come prepared to unwind to upbeat music. The practice will be followed by a Yoga Nidra to reset the nervous system.

Saturday, July 14, 1:30-3:30 and 4:30-6:30pm

Sunday, July 15, 1:30-3:30 and 6:30-8:30pm

KATONAH YOGA with FOUNDER NEVINE MICHAAN- NYC

KATONAH YOGA with FOUNDER NEVINE MICHAAN- NYC

Katonah Yoga, developed by Nevine Michaan over the past 40 years, is a Hatha yoga practice blended with Chinese Taoist theory, metaphor, and sacred geometries. It is both spiritually refined and eminently practical.

Asana is thought of like origami, where form is manipulated to produce a specific function. An origami cup should hold water. An origami boat should float. In the practice, one will develop skills and techniques to form the asanas so the shapes support the organic function. To fit and be fitting, to integrate ones body, mind and breath via form, function and imagination.

One is organized by being positioned at the center of one’s circumstances, occupying center and mediating circumference. The postures and techniques allow for greater personal awareness in time and place.

Katonah Yoga organizes the body on a template of the 3 x 3 Magic Square, with the body being the Magic Cube. The image of the sutra atman, the Golden Thread of the Imagination, provides the metaphor for the fabric woven by the imagination, the breath.

The pranayama practice supports the nervous system and guides one into a state of meditation. Using various techniques that incorporate the Magic Square and imagining the body as the house, the breath moves through the body integrating the mind, the body, and the imagination. The practice is invigorating, restorative and enlightening.

WINTER’S EDGE, SPRING’S BIRTH with Ivy Ray & Eva Giorgi

Join Katonah Yoga® teachers Ivy Ray + Eva Giorgi for the Apex of the natural worlds seasonal cycle. An immersive experience via body, breath and imagination through asana, scent, sound and touch. We will shift from the safety of winter's womb and set a conscious trajectory for an extraordinary spring rebirth.

IVY RAY_WOOM 13.jpg

WINTER OF WINTER SPRING OF SPRING
Every life, idea, adventure and moment metaphorically moves through each Season. To know what season one is in refines prescience - the capacity to see, hear, feel, whats coming, to articulate it. The Winter of Winter is the depth of essential emptiness and the root of all possibility - night prevails and lunar cycles govern. The Spring of Spring, is possibility potentiating - Soils thawing, roots plumping, minerals matriculating into the nutrients needed to produce new life in nature and in you. This is where we find ourselves on Feb 17th nearing the end of the Winter cycle and on the cusp of the Equinox of Spring. In the Chinese system it's recognized that seasonal transitions are the most stressful on the body, mind and emotions, each season's preparatory time begins during the final trajectory of the previous season.

Join us as we take best advantage of the seasons and ourselves. We will safely usher you towards the light at the end of Winter's long tunnel, placing the finishing touches in the womb for the culmination of the Yin cycle, the gestation of the year's work, continuing this potent time of restoration, inspiration and embodiment. We will then pique the imagination and set the conditions for the exponential potentiation of Spring. The beginning of the Yang cycle, rebirth, creation, the season of you launching out into the world new. We will fire up and exhilarate you with a spring technique, take your breath to its edge and fill you with scent and sound then rest at the precipice of winter with vivid taste and vision of the coming spring, with you, as always, in the center of it all.

KATONAH YOGA® was founded by Nevine Michaan, and is a Hatha yoga practice refined over forty years, blended with Taoist theory, sacred geometries, pranayama, and meditation. For more information, please visit www.katonahyoga.com.

JOURNEY THROUGH KATONAH YOGA a practice in asana + pranayama + theory with Carlos Lu

Screen Shot 2017-11-21 at 4.50.31 PM.png

The Vastu is delighted to welcome the teachings of Katonah Yoga to the space. Katonah Yoga synthesizes Hatha Yoga, Mythology, Taoist Theory and Sacred Geometry. It is a recipe for finding joy. It teaches techniques that enable me to access archetypes from the universe, which is awesome, mystical, intelligent and functional. Yoga is the dialogue between body, mind and breath.

In this wonderful workshop you will explore the template of the Magic Square through imagination, breath and body.

Learn techniques to occupy center and mediate your circumference. Use time wisely and orient yourself in time and space. Learn the Wraps of Time manipulated through pranayama.

Utilize the Magic Square Calendar to effectively organize yourself in time and envelope the Dhristi of Joy.

You will receive your own 2018 Katonah Yoga Calendar created by Katonah Yoga founder Nevine Michaan with price of workshop.

Carlos Lu is a devoted yogi and yoga teacher who seeks to inspire others to live a joyful, easeful and graceful life. He has trained extensively with Nevine Michaan, Kia Miller and Abbie Galvin. He obtained his certification in Radiant Body Yoga with Kia Miller in Rishikesh, India. He is grateful to Elena Brower for her teaching mentorship and is studying Tai Ji with Master Chungliang Huang. He teaches at Katonah Yoga Center in Bedford Hills, NY.

My physiology is my neurology. My state of mind shows up in my body mediated by my breath. As my breath, so my mind. With breath work, I vibrate higher to the frequency of joy. By folding, unfolding, twisting and stretching my body, I use the Magic Square as an image bank to weave my personal narrative, my Golden Thread.

Katonah Yoga Weekend with Eva Giorgi in Seattle, WA

Join Bala Yoga and Eva Giorgi for a Katonah Yoga Immersion in the PNW!

To Start- Katonah Yoga is a syncretic approach to yogic and well-being practices yoked within the premise that life is a mystical experience navigated with technique. In this introductory workshop you will learn the framework of the Magic Square, an ancient Chinese grid of numbers traditionally known as the Lo Shu used as an internal compass and organizational tool to place you in the center of your circumstances; from your skin and bones, to the cosmos, using and embodying the imagination, our threading Narrative or “Golden Thread” for insight and joy.

Followed by-  A class experience. Weave the Narrative through the Asana, moving from FORM to FLUENCY.  Fit and Function within form is the foundation of a Katonah Yoga asana practice. Learn to setup corporal geometries, to fit oneself and to make “fits” within postures that refine organ function and provide conditions for insight.  Mastery of metaphor will guide you through pranayama techniques to whip it up, transform your internal weather through glandular work and move into the realm of fluency using the five Golden Thread Meditations. These meditations are designed to wrap it up, leaving you well-held, well-packaged, woven, embodied.

come for one or both!

Tuning the Instrument: Teaching the Therapeutic Private With Dages Juvelier Keates

You are a yoga teacher and practitioner.
You have someone who is interested in private yoga sessions with you. What do you do?
A private yoga session is different from a group practice. In a private, you tune your instrument, in a class, you play for the symphony! This workshop is focused on training teachers to work with privates. Learn Katonah techniques to precisely read and adjust your private students. We will cover a basic structure for sequencing and organizing a session to best serve the needs of different types of students. You will gain hands-on experience to gain confidence through applied knowledge.

YOU WILL LEARN AND EXPERIENCE:

-  Working with older students

-  Working with injuries and limited mobility

-  Body readings/diagnostics

-  Breakdown of frequently used poses and techniques along with their adjustments/modifications

-  Language: how to open lungs, pump up kidneys, filter livers, modulate temperature, and self-soothe

This training will be small and personal, enabling each participant to get the information that will best support them in empowering others. Specific questions can be emailed to Dages in advance, or feel to bring in your real life examples for mentoring.

Dages has been teaching privates for fifteen years and had time to try to help, make mistakes, learn skills, and refine her techniques. Private yoga sessions constitute the great majority of her teaching, and she has worked with an eclectic swath of New Yorkers during her career, from hedge fund managers to homemakers to hockey players.

Beginning in 2002, her studies have earned her accreditations in both the Bihar and Kundalini lineages. Her syncretic teaching style has been profoundly impacted by immersion in studies with her mentor Nevine Michaan, founder of Katonah Yoga. Recent collaborations include a series of workshops with Elena Brower pairing pranayama and aromatherapy, and retreats and teacher trainings with veteran Katonah teacher Abbie Galvin, Sacred Fig founder Anton Brandt, and SKY TING co-founder Chloe Kernaghan in Bali, Dominican Republic, Greece, and Morocco.
