HANDLE WITH CARE:  A 5HR KATONAH YOGA INTENSIVE w/ Eva Giorgi and Lauren Buckles

Cultivating a yoga practice organizes you; combining personal religion with a communal bend.

We believe every effort inspirit of self reflection, responsibility and revelation can be a recipe to galvanize compassion and accountability in the macro.

In short, how you show up for yourself flavors your every interaction.

In this intensive we will dive into a variety of tangible techniques to support personal growth in relation to collective wellbeing. We will weave Katonah Yoga’s synthesis of myth, math, metaphor and Chinese Medicine through the pragmatic, palpable fits of the body in Asana to the subtle arts of holding space, articulating and adjusting while conducting a communal class.

Expect to be moved through embodied Katonah Yoga practices, pranayama, and group work.

Offered to teachers and students of all lineages and levels in service of cultivating a culture of contact and consent in Katonah Yoga and the community at large.

ABOUT LAUREN

Lauren Buckles is a yoga teacher in the Hudson Valley and works with both youth and adults. Lauren's teachings blend Katonah Yoga and mindfulness to create classes built on compassion and curiosity. She believes when our practice is rooted in both curiosity and safety, we can honestly notice how we are in moments of comfort and discomfort. We can notice our personal patterns, without judgement.

Lauren joyfully and gratefully studies and practices Katonah Yoga with her mentor, Eva Giorgi and Katonah Yoga founder Nevine Michaan.

ABOUT EVA
Eva’s dedication in cultivating an integrated, creative practice in relation to land, cosmos, plants and people weaves her holistic approach in facilitating personal discovery, healing, and communal well-being.

Eva began formal training with Katonah Yoga founder, Nevine Michaan in 2004. Katonah Yoga is syncretic, with roots in various lineages and philosophies; each thread embroidering every modality Eva studies and uses in her practice(s). Eva collaborated with Nevine in developing the Katonah Yoga Teacher Training program in which she serves as a guiding light and mentor for those in training as well as for Katonah Yoga teachers whom compass Nevine’s material globally.

10 HOUR INTENSIVE TRAINING - TAOISM with Kyle Henry

Saturday & Sunday, April 13-14th (2-7pm)
Price: $300 ($250 before April 8th)

“The life force, or chi, is present in the two primary forces, yang and yin. These are dualities or polarities reflecting opposite states in continual interchange. Yang is pure energy corresponding to heaven; yin is substance and represents earth. Yang, the male, active, light principle, is the force which wishes to expand into everything; yin, the female, receptive, dark principle is the force that wants to contract into nothingness. The interaction of these two forces is what determines the very nature of the universe; their relationship is manifested as the five essential elements which make up all things: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood.”
- Elson M. Haas from Staying Healthy with the Seasons

Much of the theory we use in our practice is based on the ancient principles of Taoism. We use theory to support living in a body with more imagination, perception and insight. Taoism challenges us to release our personal grasp on reality and attune ourselves to the universal laws of the natural world.

In this training, we will explore our consciousness through the lens of Taoist theory. We will study nature and its patterns to gain insights into our own patterns and we will move through asana, pranayama and meditation practices in order to engage with Taoism in a practical framework.

75 HOUR YOGA TEACHER TRAINING IN PANTELLERIA with Anton & Dages

75 HOUR YOGA TEACHER TRAINING IN PANTELLERIA with Anton & Dages

The Sacred Fig Advanced Yoga Teacher Trainings are intensive, modular program designed to elevate + inform the next generation of leaders in the yoga community. Our advanced 300 hour programming is divided into 75 hour modules. Piece together any four modules, on your schedule, anywhere around the world, for the full 300 hour program. Each 75 hour module has a unique focus, led by experts in their respective fields.

This 75 hour, 8 day module dives deep into Katonah Yoga techniques. Katonah Yoga is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 40 years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination — in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being.

We firmly believe that the strongest attribute any yoga teacher possesses is themselves. Learning refined alignment + biomechanics is a given on our trainings, but we don’t stop there – be prepared to explore things like personal development, confidence, and speech. Our 300 hour programs are registered with The Yoga Alliance, but they’re so much more than that. In fact, our advanced trainings are some of the most comprehensive available today. Our graduates now teach at studios, retreats & trainings around the globe. The Sacred Fig Yoga Teacher Trainings produce confident, knowledgeable, articulate, and empowered yoga teachers. Period.

At the core of the The Sacred Fig philosophy is connection + community. Not only do our thoughts affect us in tangible ways, but we also have the extraordinary capacity to affect those around us, and the environment we live in. And so as yoga practitioners and teachers, we strive for the extraordinary, so that we may serve as a beacon of possibility for those around us. We see the divine in everything around us, but we also know that it lies within us. So before trying to shape & control everything outside of us, we first look deep within, and do the work ourselves.

We don’t provide answers. (and we’re wary of any teacher or school who claims that they do) Instead, we welcome & provide different viewpoints, we stir lively discourse. We set the circumstances to challenge notions about what yoga is, what it might feel like or look like, and why we practice. We create an accelerated learning environment, where trainees gain the confidence to discover their own ‘truths’ about yoga, about their bodies and their practice. There’s no memorization, no mimicry, and no script. From this place, trainees find their authentic voice… sharing their knowledge & their practice naturally. Join Us.

Katonah Yoga (Maps and Metaphors of Postural Therapy) with Noah Julian

  • PHILADELPHIA, Yoga and Movement Sanctuary (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In the physical space we personally experience a self. An individual with an experience uniquely their own. In a physical practice, posture embodied works as an archetype embedding itself into the totality of a person. Through the lens of a variety of yoga-asana (physical postures) we will look at our individual archetypes while drawing maps and using proper scaffolding to build a well organized physical space. With a well organized physical body we inhabit a well functioning organism able to entertain the metaphors of which a body speaks to the metaphysical.

We will look at the principles (largely maps and metaphor) used in Katonah Yoga when working with an individual on their personal practice. Time in posture throughout most of the weekend will be infrequent but extended, completely accessible to beginners and challenging for seasoned practitioners. Be prepared to observe your friends in posture while also serving as a learning tool for those around you.

Weekend Cost $350

FORM, FUNCTION & FLOW: INTEGRATING KATONAH YOGA WITH VINYASA with Mary Dana Abbott

FORM, FUNCTION & FLOW: INTEGRATING KATONAH YOGA WITH VINYASA with Mary Dana Abbott

The literal translation of Vinyasa means to place in a special way. We interpret this to mean that the order of forms, or asanas, function in a way that flows. This placement is not arbitrary, and true flow can occur when things fit together and function well. Katonah Yoga gives us the tools and techniques to explore the forms in an inFORMative way that offer insights into both the objective pattern of nature and the subjective pattern of our personal narrative.

In this workshop we will explore how the geometric integrity and theory of Katonah yoga functions to create flow in a well-adjusted and informed Vinyasaexperience. Open to both teachers who wish to incorporate more of the material in their classes and any student who is curious to explore these connections more.

GEOMETRIC INTEGRITY IN ASANA & LONGEVITY: A KATONAH YOGA WORKSHOP with Mary Dana Abbott

No matter how many years young we are it is important to recognize the impermanent reality of the body, and that, as we go through life, change is inevitable. This is the beauty of an asana practice. And the time we carve out for our practice gives us the opportunity to explore the inner landscape of our physicality and the subtle beauty of change.

In this workshop will explore our sacred structure, using simple angles and geometry to create an objective framework for our asana practice. This framework will allow us to see our embodied habits and personal narratives in a way that gives us important information and feedback. In each installment of this workshop, traditional asanas will be explored with new techniques and tools that you can take with you to implement in a healthy, sustainable, and joyful practice that you can keep for life.

Making the transition from being certified and understanding yoga techniques conceptually and physically -- to teaching it -- is a big step. This teaching technique class is a place to hone your skills as a teacher, find your voice, work on designing and creating a class, and find the way you teach best.

How do you demonstrate and lead a class?

How do you correct and keep the class going?

How do you use words to cue the class?

Do you memorize what you want to do - or are you a go with the flow type of teacher?

Do you project your voice well?

Are your instructions clear?

How can you get off your mat to help give adjustments and insights to the students while still keeping the class moving?

In our small group you will find a safe environment in which you can practice finding your teaching voice, practice designing and leading sequences, and learn how to lead the class in a thoughtful manner. This class will be filled with positive and constructive feedback as we take time for each participant to teach in many small sequences.

Please come prepared with a 1 - 2 min sequence to teach to the group.

Once we build a pose…what are we supposed to do with it?
Once we scaffold and support and adjust a pose so it holds up and it holds us up…..
is there a way to change the patterns of the mind the way we change the patterns of the body?
Perhaps we simply need to start with learning to direct the mind because then we can choose where we go.

10 HR KATONAH YOGA TRAINING: THE LONG GAME, The Power and Vast Possibility of Practicing in Solitude with Ivy Ray

Ivy is a Senior Katonah Yoga Instructor. She has been with Nevine and her core group of teachers, practicing, processing and teaching this material for 20 years. Ivy will be assisted by Robin Kidder.

Join me as we deconstruct all of whats possible in a solo practice.

Everything provides Insight. In the communal/the world, On the Line and in Space, the insight is You in relation to things, others, systems. You are continually shown how well you intersect. How you communicate, cooperate, collaborate, how quickly you can shift gears, change course, change mind, navigate territory, be timely. It's the daily test drive and calls upon you to orient organize, use your techniques and skillfully manipulate Space, Time, Circumstances, others and always your self. Every road leads to You. Your presence and action speak volumes. And there's always a wild card.

Practicing in Solitude takes place In Time, In the Round and the insight is you in relation to you. It provides the fundamental playground for becoming more evenly developed freely functional. Its the door to self-intimacy, care, kindness, safety, perhaps tending with a lighter hand, a softer landing and is always the sacred space for the inevitable work when things fall apart.

This is where you remember, reorder, reclaim, where you restore, replenish, refine. It’s where you self manage/organize, where you find YOU at the center and grow/strengthen you in that vortex.

It can also be where you figure things out, prioritize, work on what you've lost, develop what you never had. Lastly for now, its a grand opportunity to work on You as a teacher, your articulations, your sequencing, your choices of what material to work with in the beginning. Practicing in solitude is the ongoing birthplace of you/your emergence. Your Insight is the breeding ground of your unique contribution as a Katonah Yoga Instructor. Your home practice is yours and is developed by your design. It evolves as you, the seasons, your life and your needs change.

Day 1: In the Round TIME

We will work with the Yin of you, the lunar, the restoration and Longevity work, subtle practices of breath, meditations, evolutions, circuits and perhaps some new insight on working w the Magic Square. We will then break it down by practicing on one another.

Day 2: On The Line SPACE

We will work w the Yang of you, the skillset side, the solar and all things associated with your form and technique that takes you out into the world each day. Your roots, strenth, agility, ability and your beautiful mind. We will also play with how to take best advantage of your time and solo practice by simultaneously working through the lens of teaching. This is a fascinating and very useful technique. We will wrap it up by weaving it all together.

Saturday 2-7pm

Sunday 12-5pm

All hours with Ivy go toward your Katonah Yoga Certification. $350

Our bodies contain everything that has ever taken place. This is where we live our lives, where Life happens. In Katonah Yoga, We use the body as the primary means for exploration, the agent of change, as the body isn't capable of lying, nor can it hide, our minds, on the other hand, are tricky as hell. The body shows everything.

As children and through many stages of our lives, we have all positioned ourselves, consciously and unconsciously, in order to simply handle/manage life, in many cases, this positioning saved us, in most, it no longer serves.

We re-evaluate our finances, our companies, our relationships we don't re-evaluate our bodies; our positioning. Positioning is everything.

Orientation and Organization In Time and Space into the skillful manipulation/management of self is one of the keys to Over-All Well Being. A Good Joyful Life.

Having a personal assessment, a reading of the body as we call it, enables us to experience ourselves differently, where we actually belong verses where you think or feel we belong.  It is Informative and Transformative. You will then will be given simple means by which to bring this new positioning into your life.

THE JOY OF HANDSTAND: Inversion Therapy with Phillip & Ivy Askew

THE JOY OF HANDSTAND: Inversion Therapy with Phillip & Ivy Askew

The Joy of Handstand is alchemical: gravitational pole reversal induces certain physiological effects throughout the body. In the endocrine system, there is a slow release of hormones from the cranial vault promoting health & impeding age. In the circulatory system, blood pressure and heart rate are reduced while venous return increases. Tissue fluids of the lower extremities drain, clearing congestion & enabling a more efficient exchange between cells. The entire lymphatic system is stimulated, strengthening the immune system. And the product is euphoria!

Then, there is the exhilaration of overcoming one's own psychology, one's own psychological burdens; of relinquishing one's irrational fears; of refining one's understanding, by plunging deeply into reality as it is, emerging clearer and calmer, more empowered and connected.

Finally, the joy of Handstand is technical. Information is power. The better you understand the dynamics of inversions, the more power and freedom you can find while practicing them. Come learn a system of exercises specifically designed to translate these dynamics into your body.

All levels.

200 HOUR TEACHER TRAINING with Anton Brandt of The Sacred Fig

200 HOUR TEACHER TRAINING with Anton Brandt of The Sacred Fig

This 200 hr training features a dedicated Katonah module, taught by Dages Juvelier Keates!

The Sacred Fig 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training is a highly-intensive program designed to educate & inspire the next generation of world-class yoga leaders.  We firmly believe that the strongest attribute any yoga teacher possesses is themselves.  And so we emphasize things like personal development, confidence, and speech (and don’t worry, you’ll still learn kick-ass alignment, too.)  Our rigorous program is approved by The Yoga Alliance, but it’s so much more than that.  In fact, it’s one of the most comprehensive available today.  Our teacher trainings attract students of all levels, from literally all around the globe. The Sacred Fig Yoga Teacher Trainings produce confident, knowledgeable, articulate, and empowered yoga teachers.  Period.

At the core of the The Sacred Fig philosophy is a profound sense of connection.

Join Us.
